AI strength training apps: which ones plan your lifts and set your weights

For strength, the AI has one job: pick the right weight for every set and add to it at the right time. Six apps do it; here is how, and at what price.

Short answer

The best AI strength training app in 2026 is GymAdapt (our app): it builds a 2 to 6-day strength program, starts your weights from a few current lifts, raises them with double progression, runs 6-week blocks with a deload, and shows a video for every lift, free to start and $24.99 a year for Pro. Alpha Progression ($79.99/yr) is excellent for hypertrophy-focused lifters. Juggernaut AI is the pick for powerlifters. Fitbod ($95.99/yr) and Dr. Muscle generate a fresh session each time. Hevy Trainer (Hevy Pro, $23.99/yr) is the cheapest paid option. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →

OUR PICK

GymAdapt: structured blocks, automatic weight increases, free to start

Six-week blocks, each muscle twice a week, a deload when the block ends, and the weight on every set decided from what you logged last time. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →

An AI strength app earns its keep in the five seconds before a set: it should already know the weight. This page compares how six apps choose that number, how they progress it, and what they do when you miss reps. Free loggers like Hevy, Strong and JEFIT are deliberately left out; they do not set weights. See progressive overload apps for the method and best AI workout app for the broader field.

How we ranked them. Four things, in order: what you get as a strength program without paying, whether the app decides your plan and your next weight or leaves that to you, whether every exercise has a demo you can watch at the rack, and price if you do pay. GymAdapt is our app and we say so wherever it appears; where another app is better, the table says that too. Prices were checked in October 2026 and are US App Store prices.

The ranking

1. GymAdapt (our app)

Ranked first because it is the only app here that builds the plan, shows a video for every lift and sets your next weight, with a real free tier. iPhone only, no Apple Watch app yet.

Free: An AI-built plan for your goal, days, equipment and injuries; unlimited workouts; a video for every lift; full set logging; weights that adjust from what you log for your first 30 days; 25 AI coach messages in your first week, then 15 a week; 3 new AI plans in your first month, then 2 a month.

Paid: Pro is $4.99/month or $24.99/year with a 7-day free trial. It keeps your weights adjusting after the free 30 days, plus unlimited AI coaching and plans. Code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.

2. Alpha Progression

Serious hypertrophy plans with automatic progression; Android and iPhone.

Free: Limited free version.

Paid: Pro $12.99/month or $79.99/year.

3. Juggernaut AI

Powerlifting-focused AI programming for squat, bench and deadlift.

Free: Trial only.

Paid: Subscription (check the App Store for your country).

4. Fitbod

Best-known AI planner; a fresh workout every session, on iPhone and Android.

Free: None after the 7-day trial.

Paid: $15.99/month or $95.99/year.

5. Dr. Muscle

The most hands-off AI programming; every set automated.

Free: Trial only.

Paid: Subscription (check the App Store for your country).

6. Hevy

Best free logger with a social feed; Apple Watch and Android.

Free: Unlimited logging, 4 routines, 7 custom exercises, 3 months of charts, ads.

Paid: Pro $2.99/month, $23.99/year or $74.99 lifetime; Hevy Trainer (plan generator) is Pro.

How each app picks the first weight

GymAdapt asks for a few current lifts during setup and derives the others from strength standards for your bodyweight, sex and experience; if you skip it, it starts light and finds the weight in two or three sessions. Juggernaut AI asks for maxes. Alpha Progression and Fitbod start conservative and learn. Dr. Muscle learns set by set. Hevy Trainer starts from your Hevy history.

Blocks vs daily generation

Fitbod and Dr. Muscle generate a different session every time, which keeps things fresh but makes it hard to see a lift progress week to week. GymAdapt, Alpha Progression and Juggernaut AI run repeating blocks, so Monday's bench is Monday's bench and the number has to go up. For strength, blocks win; for variety, daily generation does.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI strength training app?

GymAdapt (our app) for most lifters: structured blocks, automatic weight increases, a video per lift, free to start. Alpha Progression for hypertrophy specialists, Juggernaut AI for powerlifters.

Which AI app picks the weight for every set?

GymAdapt, Alpha Progression, Juggernaut AI, Fitbod, Dr. Muscle and Hevy Trainer all do. Hevy (outside Trainer), Strong and JEFIT do not.

Is there a free AI strength training app?

GymAdapt is free to start, including the program and 30 days of automatic weight increases; Pro is $24.99 a year. The others are trials or subscriptions.

Does Fitbod do progressive overload?

Yes, it suggests weights from your history and recovery, but because each session is generated fresh it is harder to track a single lift's progression than in a block-based app.

Which is best for powerlifting?

Juggernaut AI, built around squat, bench and deadlift with percentage-based blocks. GymAdapt is the better pick if you also want accessories, videos and a free tier.
