Workout apps with an AI coach: which ones actually coach you

Some "AI coaches" write your plan, some pick your weights, some only chat. We sorted nine apps by what the coach really does, with October 2026 prices.

Short answer

The best workout app with an AI coach in 2026 is GymAdapt (our app): the coach builds your plan, picks and raises your weights, and you can chat with it to swap, trim or move workouts, with a free tier (25 messages in week one, then 15 a week). Fitbod ($95.99/yr) is the best-known AI planner but has no chat. Hevy Trainer (Hevy Pro, $23.99/yr) builds and progresses a program. Dr. Muscle, Alpha Progression and Juggernaut AI automate programming for lifters, paid. Caliber, Future and Ladder sell human coaching, not AI. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →

OUR PICK

GymAdapt: an AI coach that edits your actual workout

Ask it to cut today to 30 minutes, swap an exercise that hurts, or move leg day to Thursday, and it changes the plan, not just the conversation. It also sets your weights from what you log. Free to start, Pro $24.99 a year for unlimited coaching. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →

"AI coach" has become a label on everything from a chatbot to a progression algorithm. This page grades nine apps on four concrete jobs a coach does: writes the program, sets the weight, adapts between sessions, and answers questions about your training. US App Store prices, checked October 2026; prices vary by country.

How we ranked them. Four things, in order: what you get from the coach without paying, whether the app decides your plan and your next weight or leaves that to you, whether every exercise has a demo you can watch at the rack, and price if you do pay. GymAdapt is our app and we say so wherever it appears; where another app is better, the table says that too. Prices were checked in October 2026 and are US App Store prices.

The ranking

1. GymAdapt (our app)

Ranked first because it is the only app here that builds the plan, shows a video for every lift and sets your next weight, with a real free tier. iPhone only, no Apple Watch app yet.

Free: An AI-built plan for your goal, days, equipment and injuries; unlimited workouts; a video for every lift; full set logging; weights that adjust from what you log for your first 30 days; 25 AI coach messages in your first week, then 15 a week; 3 new AI plans in your first month, then 2 a month.

Paid: Pro is $4.99/month or $24.99/year with a 7-day free trial. It keeps your weights adjusting after the free 30 days, plus unlimited AI coaching and plans. Code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.

2. Fitbod

Best-known AI planner; a fresh workout every session, on iPhone and Android.

Free: None after the 7-day trial.

Paid: $15.99/month or $95.99/year.

3. Hevy

Best free logger with a social feed; Apple Watch and Android.

Free: Unlimited logging, 4 routines, 7 custom exercises, 3 months of charts, ads.

Paid: Pro $2.99/month, $23.99/year or $74.99 lifetime; Hevy Trainer (plan generator) is Pro.

Free: None.

Paid: About $199/month.

9. Ladder

Coach-led strength classes you follow with audio and video.

Free: 7-day trial only.

Paid: About $29.99/month or $179.99/year.

Chat coaches vs algorithm coaches

Fitbod, Hevy Trainer, Dr. Muscle, Alpha Progression and Juggernaut AI are algorithm coaches: good at the maths of progression, silent when you have a question. GymAdapt is both: the progression is automatic, and the chat is grounded in your plan and your log, so "my shoulder hurts on overhead press" produces a swap in today's workout, and "I only have 30 minutes" trims it. Caliber and Future put a human on the other end, which is better coaching and 8 to 80 times the price.

What is free

GymAdapt is the only AI coach on this list with a free tier: plan, videos, logging and adaptive weights for 30 days, plus 25 coach messages in your first week and 15 a week after. Caliber's plans are free but the coaching is human and paid. Everything else is a trial or a subscription from day one.

Questions people ask

What is the best workout app with an AI coach?

GymAdapt (our app): it writes the plan, sets and raises your weights, and the chat edits your workout. Free to start; Pro $24.99 a year. Fitbod is the best-known paid alternative at $95.99 a year, without chat.

Does Fitbod have an AI coach you can talk to?

No. Fitbod generates workouts and weights with an algorithm; there is no chat.

Does Hevy have an AI coach?

Hevy Trainer, inside Hevy Pro ($23.99 a year), builds a program and progresses the weights. It is an algorithm, not a chat coach.

Is there a free AI workout coach?

GymAdapt's coach is free with caps: 25 messages in your first week, then 15 a week, plus the free plan and adaptive weights for 30 days. Pro removes the caps.

AI coach or human coach?

A human (Future about $199 a month, Caliber 1:1 $200+) is better at form feedback and accountability. An AI coach at $0 to $96 a year is better at never missing a session, doing the progression maths and being there at 6 a.m.

A coach, not just a counter, free to start

GymAdapt builds your plan and raises your weights from what you log. Free to start; code TRYFREE01 adds a month of Pro.
