Best AI workout app in 2026: 7 AI gym coaches compared

What the "AI" in each app actually does for you in the gym (plan, weights, changes on request), what is free, and what each one costs.

Short answer

For most people who lift in a gym, GymAdapt is the best-value AI workout app: the AI builds your plan, a coach can rewrite any workout when you ask, and your next weights come from the sets you log. It has a free tier, and Pro is $24.99 a year (it's our app, iPhone only). Fitbod is the best-known AI planner but costs $95.99 a year with no free tier. JuggernautAI is the pick for powerlifters, Planfit for a free AI plan, and Dr. Muscle if you want every set fully automated and don't mind $49.99 a month.

OUR #1 PICK (AND OUR APP)

GymAdapt: AI that plans, coaches and adjusts, from $0

Tell it your goal, days, equipment and any injuries and it writes the plan. Log your sets and it picks your next weight. Ask the coach to "make today 30 minutes" or "swap squats, my knee hurts" and it changes the workout, just for today or for good. Free to start; Pro is $4.99 a month. See the full app tier list →

The word "AI" on a workout app can mean three very different things: a plan generated once at sign-up, a weight suggestion on each set, or a coach you can talk to that changes your training. Most apps do one of these. A few do two. This guide compares the AI workout apps people actually ask about, by what the AI does once you are standing in the gym.

What the AI in a workout app should do

  1. Build the plan. Exercises, sets, reps and training days that fit your goal, schedule, equipment and injuries.
  2. Pick your next weight. Raise it when you beat your target, hold it when you just made it, lower it when you miss. This is the part that makes you stronger.
  3. Change the workout when life happens. Short on time, a machine taken, a sore shoulder. A good AI adjusts the session instead of making you rebuild it.
  4. Explain itself. "Up 2.5 kg because you hit 10 reps on every set" builds trust. A number with no reason does not.

Plan generation is the easy part and almost every app has it. Weight progression and editing on request are where the apps differ, and where the price usually goes.

How to pick

What AI can't do for you

No app can make you show up. The best AI plan is the one you can keep doing three or four times a week for months. Pick the app whose workouts you actually look forward to, give it four weeks of honest logging, and judge it by one thing: are your numbers going up?

FOR READERS OF THIS PAGE

GymAdapt is free to start. Want Pro free for a month?

The free version gives you an AI-built plan and unlimited workouts. Code TRYFREE01 adds a full month of Pro: weights that adjust from what you log and unlimited coach chats.

Redeem the free month → Opens the App Store with the code filled in. iPhone only. After the month it's $4.99/mo unless you cancel in Settings, and the free version stays yours either way.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI workout app?

For most gym-goers, GymAdapt offers the most for the money: an AI-built plan, weights that adjust from your logged sets, a coach that edits workouts on request, and a free tier (it's our app; iPhone only). Fitbod is the best-known alternative at $95.99 a year, JuggernautAI is best for powerlifting, and Planfit has the best free AI plan.

Is there a free AI workout app?

Yes. GymAdapt's free tier includes an AI-built plan, unlimited workouts, video demos and 30 days of adaptive weights. Planfit gives you an AI plan free. Fitbod, JuggernautAI and Dr. Muscle offer only free trials.

Is Fitbod worth it in 2026?

Fitbod is a solid AI planner, but at $15.99 a month or $95.99 a year it is one of the pricier options. If you mainly want a plan plus automatic weight progression, cheaper apps such as GymAdapt ($24.99 a year, with a free tier) do the same core job.

Can an AI app replace a personal trainer?

For planning, progression and day-to-day adjustments, a good AI app covers most of what people pay a trainer for. A human is still better for hands-on form correction, injury rehab and accountability in the room.

Does the AI workout app need my injuries?

It should ask. GymAdapt lets you list injuries and conditions when it builds your plan and avoids exercises that load them; you can also tell the coach mid-workout and it will swap the exercise.

A coach, not just a counter, free to start

GymAdapt builds your plan and raises your weights from what you log. Free to start; code TRYFREE01 adds a month of Pro.

Get GymAdapt on the App Store → Free to start. Pro is $4.99 a month or $24.99 a year (7-day free trial), or $79.99 once for lifetime. iPhone only. In English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Japanese.
