Progressive overload app: the apps that raise your weights for you

How apps decide your next weight, which ones do it automatically, and the simple rule to use if your app doesn't.

Short answer

Apps that raise your weights automatically include GymAdapt (free for your first 30 days, then Pro at $24.99 a year; our app, iPhone only), Fitbod ($95.99 a year), Gravl, Dr. Muscle, JuggernautAI (for powerlifting) and Alpha Progression Pro. Loggers like Hevy and Strong show your last numbers but leave the decision to you. If you go manual, use double progression: when you hit the top of your rep range on every set, add the smallest jump next time (usually 2.5 kg / 5 lb).

OUR #1 PICK (AND OUR APP)

GymAdapt: your next weight, worked out from your last sets

Hit every rep and the app adds the smallest sensible jump for that equipment. Just make it and it holds. Miss and it holds once, then eases off. Log reps in reserve if you like and it uses that too. Every 6 weeks it schedules a lighter week so you come back stronger.

Progressive overload means doing a little more over time: more weight, more reps or more sets. It is the reason training works, and it is where most people stall, because deciding the next weight every session is tedious and easy to get wrong. An app that does it for you removes the guesswork.

How apps decide your next weight

All three work. Research suggests adding reps and adding load both build muscle when sets are taken close to failure, so consistency matters more than the exact method.

The manual rule, if your app doesn't do it

  1. Pick a rep range per exercise: 6 to 8 for big lifts, 8 to 12 for most others, 12 to 15 for small muscles.
  2. Start with a weight you could lift for 2 or 3 more reps than the top of the range.
  3. Each session, try to add a rep to your sets.
  4. When every set hits the top of the range, add the smallest jump next time: 2.5 kg / 5 lb on barbells, the next dumbbell up, one pin on machines.
  5. If you miss the bottom of the range two sessions in a row, drop the weight about 5 to 10% and build back up.

When progress stalls

Stalls are normal. Before changing the plan, check sleep, food and how many sessions you actually made. A lighter week every 4 to 6 weeks helps; GymAdapt builds one into each 6-week block automatically. If a lift still won't move, swap it for a close variation for a block.

Questions people ask

Is there an app that automatically increases weight?

Yes. GymAdapt, Fitbod, Gravl, Dr. Muscle, JuggernautAI and Alpha Progression Pro all suggest your next weight from your logged sets. GymAdapt does it free for your first 30 days (our app, iPhone only).

What is the best progressive overload app?

For most lifters, GymAdapt gives automatic progression at the lowest price ($24.99 a year, with a free start). JuggernautAI is best for powerlifting, and Dr. Muscle is the most hands-off if price is no concern.

How much should I increase weight each week?

Use the smallest jump your equipment allows (usually 2.5 kg / 5 lb on barbells, the next dumbbell up) once you hit the top of your rep range on every set. Beginners may add weight most sessions; experienced lifters may go weeks between jumps.

Can I do progressive overload with Hevy or Strong?

Yes. They show what you lifted last time, so you can apply the double-progression rule yourself. They just won't make the decision for you.

Is adding reps as good as adding weight?

For muscle growth, research suggests both work similarly when sets are hard. Most good plans combine them: add reps within a range, then add weight.
