Adaptive workout app: the apps that adjust to you

What "adaptive" should mean (weights, reps, workouts and schedule), which apps actually do it, and what each costs.

Short answer

An adaptive workout app changes your training from what you actually do: it raises the weight when you beat your target, holds it when you just made it, and lowers it when you miss. GymAdapt adapts your weights, reps and workouts and can rewrite a session when you ask (free tier with 30 days of adaptive weights; Pro $24.99/year; our app, iPhone only). Fitbod ($95.99/year), Dr. Muscle ($49.99/month), JuggernautAI ($34.99/month) and Gravl ($14.99/month) also adapt.

ADAPTIVE IS IN THE NAME (OUR APP)

GymAdapt: every set you log shapes the next workout

Hit all your reps and the weight goes up next time. Miss repeatedly and it backs off before you stall. Sore, short on time or missing equipment? Tell the coach and today's workout changes. Every 6 weeks there is a lighter week to recover. Free to start; code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.

Most workout apps are static: the plan you get on day one is the plan you get on day ninety, and you decide every weight yourself. An adaptive app treats your log as data and adjusts. Done well, it is the closest thing to a coach watching every session.

What an adaptive app should adjust

WhatHow it should adapt
WeightUp when you beat your target, hold when you just made it, down after repeated misses
RepsAdd reps within a range before adding weight (double progression)
The workoutShorter, swapped or easier on request: time, equipment, pain
The scheduleShift the week when you miss a day instead of resetting
RecoveryA lighter week after a hard block

Does adaptive progression work?

Progressive overload, doing a bit more over time, is the core principle of strength training in the ACSM position stand. A 2022 study comparing adding load with adding reps found both increased strength and muscle size. What matters is that something goes up, steadily, and that the app backs off when you are not recovering.

Questions people ask

What is an adaptive workout app?

An app that changes your weights, reps and workouts based on what you log, instead of giving you the same plan every week.

What is the best adaptive workout app?

GymAdapt adapts weights, reps, workouts and schedule with a free tier (our app, iPhone only). Fitbod, Dr. Muscle, JuggernautAI and Gravl are paid alternatives.

How does GymAdapt decide my next weight?

From your last sessions on that exercise: beat the target and it goes up by the smallest sensible step for that equipment; just make it and it holds; miss repeatedly and it eases off.

Can I override the suggested weight?

Yes. Change any set and the app learns from what you actually lifted.

Is adaptive progression free in GymAdapt?

The first 30 days are free; after that it is part of Pro ($4.99/month or $24.99/year). Code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.

A coach, not just a counter, free to start
