App that creates a workout plan for you: 5 planners compared

Tell an app your goal, schedule and equipment and get a plan back. Which ones do it well, which keep adjusting it, and which are free.

Short answer

GymAdapt creates a full workout plan from your goal, training days, equipment and any injuries, then keeps adjusting your weights as you log (free tier; Pro $24.99/year; our app, iPhone only). Planfit creates a free AI plan, Fitbod builds each session on the fly ($95.99/year), Gravl is a clean AI trainer ($14.99/month), and Boostcamp lets you pick a proven program instead of an AI one.

OUR #1 PICK (AND OUR APP)

GymAdapt: a plan in under a minute, adjusted every session

Answer a few questions (goal, days a week, gym or home, experience, injuries) and add anything in your own words, like "45 minutes max" or "bad left shoulder". GymAdapt writes the plan, and the coach can change it any time you ask. Free to start; code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.

Getting a plan is easy now. You can ask ChatGPT and have one in ten seconds. The hard part is the plan surviving contact with real life: a missed day, a busy machine, weights that are too light by week three. The best planning apps don't just create the plan, they keep it right.

What a good plan-making app asks you

Apps that create your plan

1. GymAdapt (our app)

Best for a full plan that keeps adjusting, with a coach you can ask to change it. iPhone only.

Free: An AI-built plan for your goal, days, equipment and injuries; unlimited workouts; a video for every lift; full logging; 3 new AI plans and 5 coach messages a week; the first 30 days of adaptive weights.

2. Planfit

Best free AI plan if you will manage weights yourself.

Free: An AI-built plan and workout logging.

Paid: Advanced coaching from about $79.99/year.

ChatGPT plan vs an app plan

A chatbot plan is a good starting point and costs nothing. Its limits show up in week two: it doesn't know what you lifted, it won't adjust your weights, and you have to copy it somewhere to log it. If you already have a plan you like, a logger like Hevy is enough. If you want the plan to keep up with you, use an app that reads your log.

Questions people ask

What app creates a workout plan for you?

GymAdapt creates a full plan from your goal, days, equipment and injuries and keeps adjusting it (free tier; our app, iPhone only). Planfit, Fitbod and Gravl also create AI plans.

Is there a free app that makes a workout plan?

Yes. GymAdapt's free tier includes an AI-built plan and unlimited workouts. Planfit also creates a free AI plan.

Can ChatGPT make me a workout plan?

Yes, and it is a good start. It won't track your lifts or raise your weights, so pair it with a logger or use an app that does both.

How often should a workout plan change?

Your weights should change every week or two. The exercises can stay the same for 4 to 8 weeks; changing them too often makes progress hard to see.

Can GymAdapt work around an injury?

Yes. Tell it about the injury when it builds your plan, or ask the coach later, and it avoids or swaps the exercises that aggravate it. It is not medical advice; check with a professional for anything serious.

A coach, not just a counter, free to start

GymAdapt builds your plan and raises your weights from what you log. Free to start; code TRYFREE01 adds a month of Pro.
