Dumbbell workout app: a full plan with just a pair of dumbbells

Dumbbells are enough for real strength and muscle. Which apps build a dumbbell-only plan, and how to keep progressing when your heaviest pair starts feeling light.

Short answer

For a full dumbbell-only plan, GymAdapt builds your program from only the equipment you have and raises your weights in dumbbell-sized steps (free tier; our app, iPhone only). Nike Training Club has free dumbbell classes, and Hevy is a good free log if you already have a dumbbell routine. With adjustable dumbbells you can train every muscle for years.

JUST DUMBBELLS? ENOUGH (OUR APP)

GymAdapt: a plan that only uses what you own

Choose "Home gym" or "Minimal equipment" and every exercise is one you can do with your dumbbells. Weights go up in steps your dumbbells actually have, and when you max out a pair, the plan adds reps instead. Free to start.

A pair of adjustable dumbbells and a bench cover almost every exercise you need: presses, rows, squats, lunges, hinges and arms. The only real challenge is progression once your heaviest dumbbell feels easy. A good app plans around that.

Questions people ask

Can you build muscle with only dumbbells?

Yes. Dumbbells cover every major movement, and muscle growth is similar across light and heavy loads when sets are taken close to failure.

What is the best dumbbell workout app?

GymAdapt builds a dumbbell-only plan and raises your weights in dumbbell-sized steps (free tier; our app, iPhone only). Nike Training Club has free dumbbell classes.

What weight dumbbells should I buy?

Adjustable dumbbells are the best value. Most beginners need roughly 5 to 25 kg (10 to 50 lb) per hand over the first year.

How many days a week should I do dumbbell workouts?

Three full-body days a week is a great start. Four days of upper/lower works well once you are used to it.

Do I need a bench?

It helps for presses and rows, but floor presses and standing variations work fine without one.
