Home gym equipment: what to buy first, at every budget

The few pieces that cover almost every exercise, what they cost, and what you can skip.

Short answer

Start with adjustable dumbbells and a flat-to-incline bench: that pair covers most of the exercises in a full-body plan for roughly $400 to $800. Add a pull-up bar and resistance bands for under $100. Only buy a power rack, barbell and plates ($800 to $2,000 or more) once you are lifting consistently. Then use a plan built for your equipment: GymAdapt writes one for whatever you own (free tier; our app, iPhone only).

PLAN FOR THE GEAR YOU OWN (OUR APP)

GymAdapt: a home plan that fits your equipment

Tell GymAdapt you have "dumbbells and a bench" or "a rack and barbell" and it builds a plan using only that, with a video for every exercise and weights that go up as you get stronger. Free to start; code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.

A home gym saves the commute and the membership, but it is easy to spend a lot on gear that ends up holding laundry. Buy for the exercises you will do three times a week, in this order.

What to buy first

  1. Adjustable dumbbells (typically about $250 to $450 for a popular 5 to 52.5 lb pair). They replace a whole rack of fixed dumbbells.
  2. An adjustable bench (about $150 to $400). Flat and incline pressing, rows, split squats.
  3. A pull-up bar (about $30 to $80 for a doorway bar). The best back exercise there is.
  4. Resistance bands (about $20 to $50). Warm-ups, assisted pull-ups, extra resistance.
  5. A rack, barbell and plates (about $800 to $2,000+). Only once you have outgrown dumbbells.

What you can skip

A simple home plan with dumbbells and a bench

Day A: goblet squat, dumbbell bench press, one-arm row, Romanian deadlift, plank. Day B: split squat, incline press, pull-ups (or band-assisted), hip thrust, side plank. Alternate A and B, three days a week, 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. When you hit 12 on every set, go up in weight.

Questions people ask

What home gym equipment should I buy first?

Adjustable dumbbells and an adjustable bench. With a pull-up bar and bands, that covers most exercises for most people.

How much does a home gym cost?

You can start for under $300 with bands, a pull-up bar and a few dumbbells. A solid dumbbell setup is about $1,000, and a full rack, barbell and plates setup is $2,000 or more (typical US prices).

Can you build muscle at home?

Yes. Muscle responds to hard sets taken close to failure, not to where you train. Dumbbells and a bench are enough for years if you keep adding weight or reps.

Is a home gym cheaper than a gym membership?

Often, over time. A $1,000 dumbbell setup costs about the same as two to three years at a mid-priced gym, and it keeps resale value.

Is there an app that plans home workouts for my equipment?

GymAdapt (our app) builds a plan using only the equipment you have, with a video for every exercise. It is free to start, and code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.
