GymAdapt: a plan for your first day at the gym
Most people who stop going never had a plan. GymAdapt builds one for your goal, days and the equipment at your gym, shows a video for every machine and lift, and picks your weights. Free to start; code TRYFREE01 gives a month of Pro free.
A gym membership is a good deal if you go and a bad one if you do not. The price on the sign is rarely the full cost, and cancelling can be harder than joining. Here is how to keep both under control.
What gyms typically cost (US, 2026)
| Type | Monthly | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Budget (e.g. Planet Fitness) | From about $15 (Black Card about $25) | Annual fee about $49; enrollment fee |
| Mid-range chains | About $30 to $60 | Enrollment fee, annual fee, contract length |
| Premium / boutique | $100 to $250+ | Long contracts, class packs that expire |
| Local / community / university | Often under $30 | Limited hours |
Typical US prices; they vary by location and change often. Check the exact club before signing.
How to get a better deal
- Ask for the enrollment fee to be waived. It is the most negotiable part.
- Join during promotions: January, late summer and around Black Friday.
- Check your insurance or employer: some health plans and companies subsidize memberships.
- Try a free day pass at the busiest time you would go, to check it is not packed.
- Prefer month-to-month over a 12-month contract unless the saving is large.
How to cancel a gym membership
- Read the contract's cancellation clause before signing: notice period, method (online, in person, certified letter) and any buyout fee.
- Cancel the way the contract says and keep proof: a confirmation email, a receipt, or a tracked letter.
- Check your state law. The FTC's federal "click-to-cancel" rule was struck down by a federal appeals court in July 2025, so state automatic-renewal laws matter. Some states, such as California, require that if you could sign up online, you can cancel online.
- Watch your statement for the next billing date; dispute charges after a documented cancellation with your bank.
This is general information, not legal advice. Your contract and your state's laws decide what applies to you.
Make the membership worth it
The cheapest gym is the one you go to. Walk in with a plan, know which machines you need, and track what you lift so you can see progress in the first month. People who see progress keep going.
