"Cancel Anytime Fitness membership" is searched several thousand times a month in Australia. The confusing part is that each club is a franchise with its own contact details, and the notice rules differ by state. Here is what Anytime Fitness Australia's own help centre and state membership terms say (checked 29 October 2026). Staying with Anytime instead? See the best workout app for Anytime Fitness.
How to cancel, step by step
- Find your home club (the one on your agreement) and its contact details on the Anytime Fitness "Find a gym" page.
- Choose how to give written notice: in person (sign a cancellation form), by email to the club, or through the cancellation request portal (the club will then contact you).
- If emailing, include a form of ID with your full name, address and date of birth, and write clearly that you want your membership cancelled.
- Keep a copy of your email or the signed form, and note the date the club received it: the notice period starts then.
- Keep your direct debit running until the notice period ends; stopping it early can put your account into arrears.
- After your end date, check your bank statement.
Notice period by state
| State where you joined | After your initial term | At the end of your initial term |
|---|---|---|
| NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, TAS, NT | Ends at the start of your next billing period that is at least 30 days after the club receives notice | Tell the club at least 30 days before the expiry date |
| SA | Ends at the start of your next billing period that is at least 14 days after notice | Tell the club at least 14 days before the expiry date |
| ACT | Ends 14 days after you give notice | Tell the club at least 30 days before the expiry date |
From Anytime Fitness Australia's Membership Terms page. The help centre also says cancellation requests "carry a 30 day notice fee", so check your own agreement (clause 10) for the figure that applies to you.
Inside your minimum term?
If you signed up for a minimum term (for example 6 or 12 months) and want out early, Anytime Fitness's help centre says you will need to pay out 50% of the remaining balance. Exceptions apply for medical reasons and relocation (conditions apply, so ask your club what evidence they need).
Your rights by state
- Western Australia: under WA's fitness code you can cancel by written notice, including email, the business cannot insist you cancel in person, and the notice period cannot be more than 30 days.
- Queensland: you can end a fitness agreement by giving written notice and paying the termination fee (if any) set out in your agreement; the provider cannot charge more than the maximum stated in it.
- Other states: your membership agreement sets the rules; contact your state's fair trading or consumer affairs office if a club will not process a valid written notice.
Common problems
- "I told staff verbally." Notice must be in writing. Follow up by email or the portal.
- "I emailed a different club." It has to go to your home club; use the Find a gym page to get the right address.
- "I stopped my direct debit." That does not cancel the agreement; the club can still pursue the notice-period payments.
- "Can I cancel in the app?" Anytime Fitness's help centre describes in-person, email and the cancellation request portal, not the app.
Cancelling to save money? Keep the habit
Most people cancel because the gym got expensive or they stopped going. The habit is the part worth keeping. Cheaper options: a casual or guest pass when you need the kit, a cheaper 24/7 gym (see how to pay less for a gym membership), an employer program like Fitness Passport (how Fitness Passport works), or home workouts (three free home routines). GymAdapt (our app) rebuilds your plan for whatever kit you have, free. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →
