The Gym Group runs its gyms under the name "The Gym", and its app is one of the most searched gym apps in the UK. Here is how cancellation works according to its support centre (checked 29 October 2026). Other chains: PureGym and JD Gyms.
How to cancel The Gym Group, step by step
- Open The Gym Group app, or log in to the member's area at thegymgroup.com.
- Go to My membership.
- Choose the cancel option and follow the steps.
- Keep the confirmation.
- Paying by recurring card instead of Direct Debit? Use Live Chat: Customer Service has to cancel it for you.
Timing: 4 working days before your collection date
The Gym Group asks for changes "4 working days before your next collection date to avoid being charged your regular monthly fee". With less notice, the payment may still be taken. You keep access for the time you have already paid for; if your access stops early, contact them.
Which membership do you have?
| Membership | Can you cancel? | Refunds |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly (Standard, Off-peak, Ultimate) | Yes, any time, in the app or member's area | Only if you cancel within the first 14 days (pro-rata if you have used the gym) |
| Saver (fixed term) | It is a contract for a set period | No refund for the rest of the term, except within the first 14 days. Savers cannot be frozen |
| GymFlex (through your employer) | Through GymFlex, not The Gym Group | Per GymFlex's terms |
| Joined a gym that has not opened yet | Contact Customer Service | Ask them directly |
Cancelled by accident?
The Gym Group's support centre says you can rejoin online with the same email address and gym PIN. The catch: you rejoin at the prices and joining fee available at that time, shown before you complete sign-up. If you only need a break, freezing (below) avoids that.
Freeze instead of cancelling
- Freeze and unfreeze in the member's area or the app; the cost and start date are shown before you confirm.
- Freeze at least 4 working days before your collection date.
- Unfreezing early means paying a pro-rata part of your monthly fee to use the gym again from that day.
- Ultimate members have a free freeze option (see the support centre for the current terms); Saver memberships cannot be frozen.
Cancelling to save money? Keep the habit
Most people cancel because the gym got expensive or they stopped going. Either way, the habit is the thing worth keeping. Three cheap options: a day pass when you need the kit, a cheaper gym (see how to pay less for a gym membership), or home workouts with no equipment or a pair of dumbbells (three free home routines). GymAdapt (our app) rebuilds your plan for whatever kit you have, free. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →
