GoodLife Fitness is Canada's biggest gym chain and its app is one of the most searched fitness apps in the country. GoodLife does not publish a public cancellation page we could verify, so this guide combines what GoodLife has said publicly and its published corporate membership FAQ (January 2023), plus your provincial rights. Leaving the budget sister brand instead? See cancelling Fit4Less.
How to cancel GoodLife, step by step
- Log in to the GoodLife Member Portal on goodlifefitness.com.
- Open your membership and look for the cancel option (it sits alongside freeze and payment settings).
- Submit the cancellation and keep the confirmation (screenshot or email).
- No cancel option? Call your home club; GoodLife says this is the route for members who cannot manage their membership online.
- Keep paying through the one-month notice, then check your bank statement.
Which GoodLife membership do you have?
| Membership | Can you cancel? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bi-weekly or monthly (pre-authorized payments) | Yes, month-to-month | One month's advance notice through the Member Portal |
| Paid in full (one year) | Not before the commitment ends | It simply ends at the expiry date unless you renew |
| Corporate membership | Yes, same rules as above | Some corporate and older contracts may need a call to the club |
| Family member on your account | They cancel their own | The primary member cannot cancel or freeze a family member's membership |
From GoodLife's published corporate program FAQ (January 2023) and GoodLife's statement to blogTO. Your membership agreement is what counts.
Freeze instead of cancelling?
- Bi-weekly or monthly members can freeze for a minimum of 4 weeks / 1 month and up to 6 months in a one-year period.
- A fee may apply depending on your membership type.
- Request it in the Member Portal. Each member freezes their own membership.
Watch out for
- Email is not a cancellation channel. In 2021 GoodLife's members@ inbox auto-replied that cancellation requests sent there would not be actioned. Use the portal or your club.
- The GoodLife app is mainly for club entry (QR code), classes and workouts; manage cancellations in the Member Portal on the website.
- Keep proof. Screenshot the confirmation and the date; complaints about continued billing usually come down to missing proof.
Your rights by province
- Ontario: for memberships paid $50 or more in advance, you have a 10-day cooling-off period from receiving a written copy of your contract, and you can use the gym during it. Cancel in writing (email, hand delivery with a signed receipt, or registered mail).
- British Columbia: you can cancel for any reason within 10 days of receiving a copy of your contract, and you can cancel if the business makes an impactful change to its services (it moves, or an amenity like a pool closes). The business has 15 days to respond and refund.
- Québec: you can cancel before services start at no charge, or within the first 1/10 of the contract's length for a fee of at most 1/10 of the total price. Send the cancellation form or a written notice (registered mail recommended); refunds are due within 10 days.
- Everywhere else: your contract sets the rules; your provincial consumer protection office can help if a gym will not process valid notice. More detail: your rights by province.
Cancelling to save money? Keep the habit
Most people cancel because the gym got expensive or they stopped going. The habit is the part worth keeping. Cheaper options: a day or guest pass when you need the equipment, a cheaper gym (see how to pay less for a gym membership), or home workouts (three free home routines). GymAdapt (our app) rebuilds your plan for whatever equipment you have, free. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →
GymAdapt is free to start. Want Pro free for a month?
