Pec deck fly

The pec deck is the easiest way to train the chest hard without worrying about balance or a spotter. The machine guides the arc, so you can focus on squeezing the chest and taking sets close to failure.

Short answer

Set the seat so the handles are at chest height. Sit tall with your back on the pad, grab the handles with a soft bend in the elbows, and bring them together in front of your chest. Pause, then let them open slowly until you feel a chest stretch. 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.

How to do it

1
Adjust the seat. Handles at mid-chest height when you sit down.
2
Sit tall. Back flat on the pad, feet on the floor, chest up.
3
Grab the handles. Soft bend in the elbows, wrists straight.
4
Bring them together. Squeeze the handles toward each other in front of your chest and pause for a second.
5
Open slowly. Let the handles travel back until your chest is stretched, without letting the weight stack touch.

What it should feel like

The chest squeezing hard at the front and stretching on the way back. The arms are just hooks.

Push-up

A compound chest move you can do anywhere.

Great as a finisher. Use slow reps and a one-second squeeze to get more out of light weights. The simplest rule that works: add reps inside the range first, and once every set hits the top of the range, add weight next session. GymAdapt does this for you from the sets you log, and tells you why the target changed.

Questions people ask

Is the pec deck good for building chest?

Yes. It isolates the chest safely and lets you train close to failure, which makes it a good accessory to pressing.

Pec deck or cable fly?

Both work. The pec deck is simpler; cables let you change angles.

What seat height for pec deck?

Set it so the handles are level with the middle of your chest.

How many sets and reps on the pec deck?

2 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 reps, the last few reps hard.
