Push-up

The push-up is the most underrated chest exercise there is. It trains the same muscles as the bench press, it works your core at the same time, and you can do it anywhere. If regular push-ups are too hard, there is a version that is not.

Short answer

Hands a little wider than your shoulders, body in a straight line from head to heels. Lower your chest to just above the floor with elbows about 45 degrees from your body, then push back up. Build to 3 sets of as many good reps as you can, then make them harder.

How to do it

1
Hands under the shoulders, slightly wider. Fingers spread, pointing forward.
2
Make a straight line. Squeeze your glutes and brace your stomach so your hips do not sag or pike.
3
Lower as one piece. Elbows about 45 degrees from your sides, chest goes down between your hands.
4
Go all the way down. Chest just above the floor, or touching a fist or yoga block.
5
Push the floor away. Press back up to straight arms, keeping the line from head to heels.

What it should feel like

Chest and triceps working, core holding you rigid. If your lower back aches, your hips are sagging; squeeze the glutes harder.

Common mistakes

Variations

Incline push-up

Hands on a bench or counter. The easier version to build up to full push-ups.

Barbell bench press

The loaded version once push-ups get easy.

Chest dip

A harder bodyweight push for chest and triceps.

When you can do 3 sets of 20 good reps, make them harder: feet on a bench, a slower lowering, a pause at the bottom, or a backpack with weight. The simplest rule that works: add reps inside the range first, and once every set hits the top of the range, add weight next session. GymAdapt does this for you from the sets you log, and tells you why the target changed.

Questions people ask

How many push-ups should I do a day?

You do not need to do them daily. 3 sets close to failure two or three times a week builds strength and muscle.

What if I cannot do a push-up?

Start with incline push-ups with your hands on a bench or kitchen counter, and lower the height over the weeks.

Do push-ups build muscle?

Yes, if you take sets close to failure and make them harder over time, push-ups build chest and triceps muscle.

Wide or narrow push-ups?

Slightly wider than shoulder width is the standard. Narrow hands shift more work to the triceps.
