Incline dumbbell press

The incline dumbbell press shifts more of the work to the upper part of the chest, the area most people feel is lagging. A low incline is the sweet spot: steep enough to bias the upper chest, not so steep that it turns into a shoulder press.

Short answer

Set the bench to 30 to 45 degrees. Start with the dumbbells over your upper chest, lower them to the sides of your upper chest with elbows about 45 degrees out, then press back up. 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps.

How to do it

1
Set the bench to 30 to 45 degrees. Lower is more chest, higher is more shoulders. 30 degrees is a good default.
2
Get set. Dumbbells kicked up from your thighs, shoulder blades back and down, feet planted.
3
Start over the upper chest. Arms extended, dumbbells above your collarbones.
4
Lower to the upper chest. Elbows about 45 degrees from the body, down until you feel a stretch.
5
Press up. Drive the dumbbells back up over your shoulders without banging them together.

What it should feel like

The upper chest, just below the collarbones, stretching at the bottom and squeezing at the top. If it is all front shoulders, lower the bench.

The flat version for overall chest.

Cable crossover

Heavier loading on a flat bench.

Put it first on an upper-body day if your upper chest is a priority, or second after flat pressing. The simplest rule that works: add reps inside the range first, and once every set hits the top of the range, add weight next session. GymAdapt does this for you from the sets you log, and tells you why the target changed.

Questions people ask

What angle is best for incline dumbbell press?

Around 30 degrees for most people. Steeper angles shift more work to the front of the shoulders.

Does incline press build the upper chest?

Yes. Pressing on an incline puts more of the load on the upper (clavicular) part of the chest than flat pressing.

Incline dumbbell or incline barbell?

Dumbbells give more range and are friendlier on the shoulders; the barbell loads heavier. Both work.

How many sets and reps for incline dumbbell press?

3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps, one to three reps short of failure.
