Seated dumbbell shoulder press

The seated dumbbell press is the easiest way to load the shoulders safely. The back pad holds your torso, and each arm moves on its own path, which most shoulders like better than a barbell.

Short answer

Sit on a bench with the back upright, dumbbells at shoulder height, palms facing forward or slightly in. Press them up until your arms are straight over your shoulders, then lower until they are around ear level. 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps.

How to do it

1
Set the bench upright. Back pad at 80 to 90 degrees.
2
Get the dumbbells up. Rest them on your thighs, then kick them up to shoulder height one at a time.
3
Start position. Dumbbells beside your ears, elbows slightly in front of your body, palms forward or angled in.
4
Press up. Push the dumbbells up over your shoulders until your arms are straight.
5
Lower to ear level. Bring them down under control to around ear or chin height.

What it should feel like

Front and side shoulders doing most of the work, triceps finishing the press. No pinching at the top of the shoulder.

Variations

Overhead barbell press

Standing barbell version for heavier loading.

Lateral raise

Isolates the side delts.

Rear delt raise

Balance pressing with rear-shoulder work.

Pair it with lateral raises and rear delt work for balanced shoulders. The simplest rule that works: add reps inside the range first, and once every set hits the top of the range, add weight next session. GymAdapt does this for you from the sets you log, and tells you why the target changed.

Questions people ask

Is seated dumbbell press good for shoulders?

Yes. It trains the front and side delts with a stable, shoulder-friendly position.

Dumbbell or barbell shoulder press?

Dumbbells allow a more natural path for each arm; the barbell loads heavier. Both build the shoulders.

How low should I lower the dumbbells?

Around ear or chin level. Going lower adds little and can strain the shoulder.

How many sets and reps for dumbbell shoulder press?

3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps.
