How to do it
What it should feel like
The abs working very hard to hold your torso straight. Your lower back should not ache.
Common mistakes
- Lower back sagging. Shorten the range until you can hold the brace.
- Hips leading. Hips and arms move together; do not stick your butt up.
- Going too far too soon. Build the range over weeks.
- Holding your breath for too long. Exhale on the way back.
Variations
The easier static version to build up to rollouts.
Roll toward a wall so it stops you at a safe distance.
From your feet: very advanced.
Sets, reps and programming
| Goal | Sets × reps | Effort | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muscle | 3 × 6–15 | Stop 1–2 reps before failure | 90 s |
| Building up | 3 × 5–8 of the easier version | Clean reps only | 60–90 s |
| Stronger | 3–4 × 6–10 with added weight | 1–3 reps in reserve | 2 min |
Start with short rollouts, or roll toward a wall to limit the range, and add distance as you get stronger. The simplest rule that works: add reps inside the range first, and once every set hits the top of the range, add weight next session. GymAdapt does this for you from the sets you log, and tells you why the target changed.

You are rolling out further than you can control. Shorten the range and brace harder.
How many ab wheel rollouts should a beginner do?
Start with 3 sets of 5 short rollouts and build the range over a few weeks.
How many sets and reps for ab wheel rollouts?
3 sets of 6 to 12 controlled reps.
