Ladder launched in 2020 with a simple pitch: personal-trainer-quality programming, delivered as follow-along video, for the price of a couple of coffees a week. Six years on it has a 4.9 App Store rating from more than 26,000 people, and the reviews say the same two things over and over: "I just open it and press play," and "my team keeps me going." Both are real, and both are the whole product.
How it works
A quiz about goals, equipment and preferences points you at a few coaches. You join one coach's team and get that week's workouts laid out, usually six with three flagged as the must-dos. Each workout is a full video: the exercise loops on screen, the coach cues you before every set, you log your weights and reps in the app, and the six-week block gets heavier as it goes, then deloads. You can swap days around but you can only do that week's scheduled sessions. That's the point. It's a program, not a buffet.
What Ladder is great at
- Progressive overload without thinking. Garage Gym Reviews scored it 5/5 here. The blocks are built properly and the app tracks your loads so you can beat them.
- Accountability. Team chat with the coach in it, badges for streaks, "cheers" from teammates. For a lot of people this is why they're still training in month four.
- Low equipment demands. Most programs need dumbbells, kettlebells, bands, maybe a bar. Coaches call out alternatives verbally.
- The trial. Seven days, no card up front.
What it isn't
- Cheap. $29.99 a month is triple most loggers and four times GymAdapt. The annual plan brings it to $14.99 effective and unlocks all teams; monthly limits you to two team changes.
- Personalized. Everyone on a team does the same workout. Your weights are yours; the exercises and volume are the coach's. If you have a cranky shoulder, you're on your own.
- For beginners. Cues are verbal and nobody's watching your hinge. Garage Gym Reviews explicitly flags this.
- On Android. iPhone only.
- Flexible. Only that week's scheduled workouts are available. Great for discipline, annoying if life happens.

Our take, with the obvious bias declared
If you want a coach's voice and a team, Ladder is the best version of that on the market and we're not going to tell you otherwise. If what you actually want is a program that's yours, weights that go up when you earn it, and video for every movement, that's what GymAdapt does at a quarter of the price. The difference is who's in charge: Ladder's coach, or your own log.
Questions people ask
How much does the Ladder app cost?
$29.99 a month or $179.99 a year (about $14.99 a month). A PRO+ tier at $34.99 a month has also been offered. There is a 7-day free trial with no card required.
Is Ladder available on Android?
No. Ladder is iPhone only.
Is Ladder good for beginners?
It can work, but reviewers flag that cues are verbal and there's no form feedback. Total beginners often do better with a few in-person sessions first, or an app with per-set targets and video for every exercise.
Can I cancel Ladder?
Yes, in the app or by emailing hello@joinladder.com. Cancel at least three business days before your next billing date.
What is a cheaper alternative to Ladder?
GymAdapt ($7.99/mo) for AI-built, adaptive plans with video; Caliber (free tier) for structured strength programs; Hevy ($2.99/mo) if you just need to log.
Your program. Your weights. A quarter of the price.
GymAdapt builds a 6-week block for you, shows a real video for every lift, and raises the targets when your log says you're ready.
