GymAdapt: free, or $24.99 a year for Pro
GymAdapt builds a plan for your goal and equipment, logs every set, and sets your next weight and reps from what you lifted. The free version covers unlimited workouts; Pro is $24.99 a year, less than one month of Ladder. Get GymAdapt free on the App Store →
Fitness app prices make more sense once you sort them by what you are paying for. A logger stores your sets. An AI planner writes your workouts and adjusts them. A class app gives you a coach on video. A coaching app gives you a real person. Each step up roughly doubles the price.

Why Ladder costs more than most
Ladder charges for coaching, not software: a named coach programs each 6-week plan, records every session on video, and you train alongside a team. That is closer to a group class than a tracker, and it is priced like one. If you want a coach on screen, the yearly plan ($179.99, about $15 a month) is the way to pay. If you mostly want to know what to lift and when to go heavier, a planner or logger does that for a fraction of the price. Full breakdown: How much does the Ladder app cost?
Five ways to pay less
- Pay yearly. Ladder, Fitbod, Hevy, Strong and GymAdapt all cost 30-60% less per month on the yearly plan.
- Use the free trial on purpose. Set a reminder for the day before it bills. On iPhone you cancel in Settings › your name › Subscriptions.
- Look for lifetime licences. Hevy ($74.99) and Strong ($99.99) sell one-time unlocks that beat paying monthly within about two years.
- Start on a free tier. GymAdapt, Hevy, Strong and JEFIT all work without paying; upgrade only when you hit a limit you care about.
- Do not stack apps. One app that plans and logs beats a class app plus a separate tracker.
What you actually get at each price
- Free: logging, a library of exercises, sometimes a basic plan. GymAdapt's free version adds an AI plan and unlimited workouts.
- $2-5 a month (or about $25 a year): unlimited routines, full history and charts. GymAdapt Pro ($24.99/year) keeps your weights adjusting every set.
- $10-16 a month: AI planning (Fitbod) or a class library (Apple Fitness+, Peloton).
- $30 a month: a coach-led program with video for every session (Ladder).
- $150-200 a month: a real person who writes your plan and checks in (Future, Caliber coaching).
Whatever you pay, progress comes from doing a little more over time: one more rep, a bit more weight. An app is worth its price if it makes that easy to see and easy to do. Try GymAdapt free →

What is the average cost of a fitness app?
Most paid fitness apps cost $3 to $30 a month. Loggers are cheapest ($3-5), AI planners and class apps are in the middle ($10-16), and coach-led apps like Ladder are about $30. Human coaching apps cost around $150-200.
Is there a free fitness app that is actually good?
