Free workout app vs lifetime purchase: the math

A lifetime unlock only wins if you'll use the app past its break-even point. Here's that number for Hevy, Strong and GymAdapt, and when free is enough.

Short answer

Divide the lifetime price by the yearly price to get break-even: Hevy about 3.1 years, Strong about 3.3 years, GymAdapt about 1.6 years. If the free tier already does everything you use, stay free. If you want the app to plan your training and will use it past break-even, lifetime is the cheapest way to pay.

Try before you decide on lifetime

Not sure GymAdapt is worth $79.99 once? Use code TRYFREE01 for a free month first, then decide.

Redeem the free month → Opens the App Store with the code filled in. iPhone only. After the month it's $7.99/mo unless you cancel in Settings.

The three ways to pay for a workout app

Free tier: $0 forever, with limits (fewer routines, shorter history, no planning). Subscription: monthly or yearly, full features while you pay. Lifetime: one payment, full features for as long as the app exists. Which is cheapest depends on one number: how long you'll keep using it.

The break-even math

AppYearlyLifetimeLifetime pays for itself after
Hevy Pro$23.99$74.99About 3.1 years
Strong Pro$29.99$99.99About 3.3 years
GymAdapt$49.99$79.99About 1.6 years

Break-even is just the lifetime price divided by the yearly price. Against monthly billing it comes much sooner: GymAdapt's lifetime equals 10 months at $7.99, and Hevy's equals about 25 months at $2.99.

When free is the right answer

If you follow a program from a coach, a book or a PDF and only need to record sets, a free tier is genuinely enough. Hevy's free tier (unlimited workouts, four routines) covers most people who train this way. Pair it with our free 4-week plan if you need a program.

When paying beats free

Pay when the app saves you a decision you'd otherwise get wrong or skip: what to lift today, how much weight, when to back off. That's planning, not logging, and it's the part free tiers leave out. If you're going to pay for more than about a year and a half, GymAdapt's lifetime unlock is cheaper than its yearly plan.

Questions people ask

Is a lifetime workout app worth it?

If you'll use the app for longer than the break-even point, yes. Hevy's $74.99 lifetime pays for itself in a bit over 3 years versus its yearly plan; Strong's $99.99 in about 3 1/3 years; GymAdapt's $79.99 in about 1.6 years.

Which workout apps have a lifetime option?

Hevy ($74.99), Strong ($99.99) and GymAdapt ($79.99) all sell a one-time lifetime unlock as of September 2026. Many others, including Fitbod and Ladder, are subscription only.

Should I just use the free version?

If the free tier does everything you use, yes. Upgrade only when you hit a limit you actually feel, like running out of saved routines or wanting the app to plan your weights.

What happens to a lifetime purchase if the app shuts down?

You'd lose it. A lifetime unlock is only as durable as the company. Export your data regularly (CSV or JSON) whichever app you choose.
