Free weightlifting app: the free tiers, compared honestly

Hevy, Strong, Jefit and Caliber all log your lifts for free. Here's what each free tier actually includes, what upgrading costs, and which one fits how you train.

Short answer

Hevy has the most usable free tier for lifting (unlimited workouts, 4 routines, 3 months of charts). Strong is the fastest logger, Jefit has the deepest free analytics, and Caliber's free plan gives you an actual program. None of the free tiers pick your next weight; GymAdapt does, as a paid app with a free trial.

What to look for in a weightlifting app

Lifting apps live or die on four things: logging a set in two taps, seeing last session's numbers while you lift, a rest timer, and history you can trust. Everything else is extra. Here's how the free tiers stack up.

The honest pick

If you already have a program and just want to record it, Hevy's free tier is the one to beat. If speed matters more than anything, Strong. If you love numbers and don't mind an older-looking app, Jefit. If you don't have a program, Caliber's free plan gives you one, or grab our free 4-week plan PDF and log it in Hevy.

The one thing free lifting apps don't do

Free tiers record the past. They don't decide your next set. That's fine if you're happy doing the math yourself: add weight when you hit the top of your rep range on every set, hold it when you don't. If you'd rather your app do that, it's a paid feature almost everywhere. GymAdapt sets every target from your log, adds plates when you're ready, backs off when you're not, and has a plate calculator and rest timer built in.

Questions people ask

What is the best free weightlifting app?

Hevy has the most usable free tier for lifting: unlimited workouts, four saved routines, and three months of charts. Strong is the fastest pure logger. Jefit has the deepest free exercise library and analytics.

Is there a free weightlifting app that tracks progress?

Yes. Hevy, Strong and Jefit all log sets, reps and weight on their free tiers and show progress charts, though Hevy's free charts cover the last three months.

Is there a free app that tells you what weight to lift?

Not really. Free tiers log what you did; choosing the next weight is a paid feature in most apps. GymAdapt does it on every set (paid, with a free trial and a TRYFREE01 free-month code).

Is Strong or Hevy better for free?

Hevy's free tier allows four routines to Strong's three and includes a social feed you can ignore. Strong is quicker to log and has the cleaner CSV export. Both are good.
