Most beginners don't need 1,400 exercises or a social feed. They need four things: a plan that says what to do today, a short video of each movement, a record of what they lifted last time, and a rule for when to add weight. Free apps usually cover one or two of those. Here's which covers what.
| App | Plan for you | Tracks your weights | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nike Training Club | Yes (video classes) | No | Free |
| Caliber (free plan) | Yes (strength program) | Yes | Free · coaching is paid |
| Hevy (free tier) | No, bring your own | Yes | Free · Pro $2.99/mo |
| Strong (free tier) | No, bring your own | Yes | Free · Pro $4.99/mo |
| GymAdapt | Yes, built for your goal and days | Yes, and sets your next weight | $7.99/mo after a 7-day trial |
The best free setups for a beginner
Free and complete: Caliber's free plan. It's real strength programming with logging, which is rare at $0. The paid tiers add human coaching.
Free and flexible: our free 4-week beginner plan (PDF) plus Hevy's free tier to log it. You get a proper plan and a clean logger, and the only thing you do by hand is decide when to add weight (the PDF has the rule).
Free and follow-along: Nike Training Club if you'd rather press play and copy a trainer. Great for getting moving; not built for tracking barbell numbers.
Where GymAdapt fits
GymAdapt isn't free, and we won't pretend it is. What you pay for is the part that's hard to do alone as a beginner: it builds the plan for your goal, days and equipment, shows a video for every exercise, picks starting weights for your level, and moves each target up (or back) from what you log. If you want to try that without paying, code TRYFREE01 gives you a month free.
Beginner mistakes an app can't fix
- Changing the plan every week. Progress comes from repeating the same lifts and adding weight. Give a plan at least 4 weeks.
- Going to failure on every set. Stopping 1 to 3 reps short is enough to grow and lets you train again in two days.
- Not writing anything down. If you can't remember last week's weight, you can't beat it.
Questions people ask
What is the best free gym app for beginners?
If you want to be told exactly what to do with weights, Caliber's free plan is the strongest free option. For follow-along video workouts, Nike Training Club is completely free. If you just need somewhere to log a plan you already have, Hevy's free tier is the easiest.
Do beginners need a workout app?
No, but you need a plan and a record of what you lifted. A free printable plan plus a notes app works. An app helps most with the boring part: remembering last session's weights and telling you when to add more.
Is Nike Training Club good for the gym?
It's best for classes and bodyweight or light-dumbbell workouts. It doesn't track the weight you lift, so it's a weak fit for barbell and machine training.
Is Hevy good for beginners?
Hevy is an excellent free logger, but it doesn't write your program. Beginners usually pair it with a plan from somewhere else.
Is GymAdapt free?
No. It has a 7-day free trial on the monthly and yearly plans, and readers of this page can use code TRYFREE01 for a full free month. After that it's $7.99 a month or $49.99 a year.
