Week 2 opened the way the whole slate is priced: with points. Buffalo and Detroit went over the highest total on the board inside three quarters and the Bills pulled away 41-31. Now there are thirteen more games, two of them essentially decided by the number — the 49ers laying 13.5, the Ravens laying 8.5 — and a middle of the slate the books can't separate. Here is everything before kickoff.
What already happened
Bills 41, Lions 31 (Thursday)
The Thursday nightcap in Buffalo was supposed to be the shootout, and it was. The Bills, favored by 4.5, led wire-to-wire and covered; the 54.5 total — the biggest of the week — was over before the fourth quarter. Detroit's offense kept it from being a blowout, but the Lions' defense had no answer, and Buffalo moved to a fast start with the number tucked away. The read for the rest of the week: the market that set 54.5 as its top total and watched it fly is going to keep pricing offense, which is exactly when overs get expensive.

The five games that decide how Week 2 is remembered
Commanders at Cowboys — Cowboys -4.5
The best division game on the board and the highest total on Sunday at 50.5. Dallas is a home favorite with a defense the whole offseason was spent rebuilding — the market clearly believes the fix took, or it wouldn't be laying a field goal and a half in a game priced for 50 points. Washington is the swing: if it can trade scores, the total is live and the spread is nervous. NFC East, Fox, and money on both sides.
Colts at Chiefs — Chiefs -6.5
Kansas City laying almost a touchdown at home is the old normal, and the number says the market is ready to trust the Chiefs again. Indianapolis has quietly been a problem for good teams and brings a run game that can shorten this thing. If the Colts hang around into the fourth quarter, the "Chiefs are back" story gets complicated in a hurry.
Dolphins at 49ers — 49ers -13.5
The biggest number of the season, and San Francisco is laying it even after losing a receiver to a long-term injury. That's the tell: the books think the gap between these rosters is two touchdowns regardless of who's active. Two touchdowns is a lot in the NFL, and Miami only has to keep it competitive to cash. The 45.5 total does most of the talking here — this is a spread you either believe completely or fade on principle.
Vikings at Bears — Bears -4.5
Chicago at home, favored by more than a field goal, with a young quarterback the league is starting to talk about in bigger terms. Minnesota visits a Bears team that scored in bunches to open the year. Division game, dome-loud crowd, a total of 48.5 that expects points. This is the NFC North's early temperature check.
Giants at Rams (Monday) — Rams -7.5
The Monday nightcap has the Giants two scores of underdog in Los Angeles. New York had one of the more talked-about Week 1 performances in the league, and the market is daring it to prove that was real against a Rams team that expects to contend. Seven and a half is a big number for a Monday night; it says Los Angeles at home is a class above until the Giants show otherwise.
The rest of the slate, quickly
- Panthers at Falcons (CAR -2.5). A rare road favorite of the week and a low total (43.5); the books like Carolina on the road more than the home team.
- Bengals at Texans (HOU -2.5). Two of the AFC's more watchable offenses in a near pick'em; Houston's home-field edge is the whole margin.
- Browns at Buccaneers (TB -8.5). Tampa lays more than a touchdown at home; Cleveland's number is trending the wrong way already.
- Packers at Jets (GB -3.5). Green Bay on the road as the field-goal favorite; the Jets are home dogs the market isn't sure about.
- Saints at Ravens (BAL -8.5). Baltimore lays a big one at home; New Orleans is priced as a get-right spot.
- Eagles at Titans (PHI -7). Philadelphia lays a touchdown on the road, and the 39.5 total is the lowest on the board — the market expects a grind.
- Steelers at Patriots (NE -5.5). New England favored at home by more than a field goal; a low total (41.5) that says defense travels.
- Jaguars at Broncos (DEN -2.5). Denver's defense at home against a Jacksonville team getting early MVP buzz at quarterback. Best under-the-radar game on the slate.
- Raiders at Chargers (LAC -6.5). A division game where the Chargers lay nearly a touchdown at home.
- Seahawks at Cardinals (SEA -3.5). Seattle on the road as the field-goal favorite; a 41.5 total that expects a defensive afternoon in the desert.
