Week 1 is the week the market knows the least. Lines are built on last season's tape, depth charts are guesses, and the two games already played both went under and both saw the favorite lose. That's the environment. Below: the players who decide Sunday, the props with a real case behind them, the spreads we like, and seven predictions bold enough to be wrong. None of this is advice. All of it is what we'd actually do.
Players to watch, and the number that goes with them
Kyler Murray, QB, Vikings — over 1.5 passing touchdowns (+116)
Best receiving room of his career, dome, division game, a line that says the books think it's close. Murray's floor in Arizona was a bad offensive line and no second receiver; in Minnesota he has Jefferson, Addison and Hockenson. Two touchdowns at plus money against Green Bay is the cleanest quarterback prop on the board.
Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Lions — anytime touchdown (-330)
The shortest scorer price of the week and it's still fair. Detroit is laying 6.5 at home against Tyler Shough's Saints with a 49.5 total, which projects to roughly 28 Lions points. Gibbs gets the goal-line work now. Don't bet -330 straight; use him as the anchor in a same-game parlay with Lions -6.5.
Dalton Kincaid, TE, Bills — anytime touchdown (+340)
Led Buffalo in touchdown catches last year with seven in fourteen games. DJ Moore's arrival should pull coverage outside and leave the seams to Kincaid. Against a Houston defense that gives up little on the perimeter, the tight end is where Allen goes in the red zone. +340 is too long for a team's leading red-zone target.
Dallas Goedert, TE, Eagles — anytime touchdown
Washington was 30th in touchdowns allowed to tight ends in 2025 and Goedert scored on them last year. Eagles are -5.5 at home. Matchup-driven prop; take whatever plus money your book gives.
Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, WR, Bengals — receiving yards overs
Highest total of the week (50.5) and the books expect heavy public money on Cincinnati. When the market expects a shootout, receiver yardage overs are usually priced up, so this is less about value and more about game script: Tampa's defense is in transition and Burrow has two red-zone options who both cleared 1,000 last year. Pick the one with the lower line.
Drew Lock, QB, Seahawks — Week 2, not Week 1
Nothing to bet Sunday, but watch the Darnold news. Lock's relief outing (187 yards, a touchdown, the win) will move his Week 2 passing props if he's named the starter against Arizona. That's the line to be early on.
De'Von Achane, RB, Dolphins — anytime touchdown
Miami's roster is bad and Malik Willis is new, which is exactly why Achane matters: he's the one player on that offense who can score from anywhere, and the Raiders' defense hasn't been fixed. Recommended around the industry this week as a mid-price scorer; the case is touches, not team quality.
The spreads we'd play
Fade list
- Cowboys -2.5. Public side, road, new opposing coach, Sunday night. Everything the market overprices at once.
- Chargers -9.5 vs Cardinals. LaFleur is a good play-caller and Brissett doesn't turn it over. Herbert wins; ten points is a lot.
- Any Rams bounce-back narrative. They lost by twenty with a new coordinator and a line that couldn't protect Stafford. Week 2 at home is where you look, not now.
Seven bold predictions for Week 1
- Kyler Murray throws for 300 and three touchdowns in his Vikings debut and the "Minnesota didn't need him" take dies by Sunday night.
- Mahomes throws for under 230 yards, the Chiefs win anyway, and the story Tuesday is the defense, not the knee.
- Jaxson Dart outplays Dak Prescott on Sunday night. Not a guarantee of a win, but the Giants cover and the Harbaugh–Dart thing becomes the NFC East's storyline through October.
- Drew Lock is named Seattle's starter for Week 2 on Monday and doesn't give the job back until at least Week 5.
- Deshaun Watson throws two interceptions in Jacksonville and Todd Monken's post-game press conference has a quarterback question in the first three minutes.
- Nine of Sunday's thirteen games go under the total. The openers set the tone; September defenses are ahead of September offenses.
- Fernando Mendoza takes at least one snap by Week 4. Not Sunday. But Cousins behind the Raiders' line, in a Dolphins game the Raiders are favored to win, is the last comfortable week Vegas gets.
A short word on Week 1 betting
It's the week bettors lose the most money because it's the week they feel most certain. Every take is nine months old. If you're playing, play small, play the games you've actually watched (there are two so far), and treat everything above as an argument to be checked, not a tip. Both openers already cashed the under and beat the favorite; the market will adjust by 4:25 Sunday. Be earlier than that, or don't bother.
