Two weeks of buy games and nervous openers are over. Week 3 is the first Saturday that actually sorts the top 25: a top-10 game in the SEC with a coaching-revenge subplot writers dream about, a ranked Big 12 fight on Friday night, a one-point ACC game between ranked teams, and three of the top five taking their last easy Saturday before the schedule turns. Here's the whole thing.
The game of the week: No. 7 LSU at No. 8 Ole Miss
Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET · Ole Miss -3 · Total 59.5. Lane Kiffin spent years turning Ole Miss into a place that could hang 50 on anyone and recruit like a blue blood, then left for LSU — and his first September back in Oxford is ranked, top-10, and inside a field goal. The number tells the story: the home team is favored by three, which in college football is roughly the value of the building, meaning the market thinks these are essentially even rosters and Vaught-Hemingway is the tiebreaker. A total of 59.5 says everyone expects points, which is what you'd expect from two offenses this coach's tree produces. If you watch one game this weekend, it's this one.
The other two ranked-vs-ranked games
No. 22 Houston at No. 13 Texas Tech (Friday, 8 ET) — Texas Tech -7.5
The Big 12's first ranked collision gets the Friday-night spotlight to itself. Texas Tech at home laying a touchdown against a ranked Houston team is the market saying the Red Raiders are the real contender and the Cougars are the team still proving it. A total of 53.5 splits the difference between a track meet and a defensive battle. Get in early; this one's over before most of Saturday kicks off.
No. 16 SMU at No. 23 Louisville (3:30 ET) — Louisville -1.5
A one-and-a-half-point line between ranked ACC teams is as close to a coin flip as the board offers all weekend, and the total of 59.5 matches the LSU–Ole Miss number — the books expect a shootout. SMU's return to relevance meets a Louisville program that keeps hovering around the top 25. Whoever wins takes the early inside track in a wide-open ACC.
The top five take care of business
- No. 1 Texas vs UTSA (-29.5). The Longhorns close the weekend at 8 ET as a four-touchdown favorite; the only drama is style points.
- No. 2 Georgia at Arkansas (-25.5). The Bulldogs open SEC play on the road but are still laying nearly four scores; Arkansas at home is the kind of noise Georgia has learned to ignore.
- No. 3 Notre Dame vs Michigan State (-29.5). A prime-time tune-up in South Bend before the schedule stiffens.
- No. 4 Indiana vs Western Kentucky (-44.5) and No. 5 Miami at Wake Forest (Fri, -21). Miami takes its show on the road Friday; Indiana keeps stacking blowouts.
- No. 6 Ohio State vs Kent State (-52.5). The largest number on the board. Nothing to see but the second string.
The rest of the ranked slate
- Florida State at No. 10 Alabama (-20.5). Alabama at home in a bounce-back spot; Florida State visits as a three-touchdown dog with a total of just 49.5.
- Kentucky at No. 9 Texas A&M (-16.5). The Aggies host an SEC opener they're expected to control.
- No. 12 USC at Rutgers (-23.5) and No. 24 Oklahoma vs New Mexico (-22.5). Big favorites keeping the unbeaten records clean.
- No. 25 Virginia vs West Virginia (-10) — the Backyard Brawl. A ranked Virginia team laying double digits in one of the sport's older grudge games.
- North Carolina at Clemson (-3.5). Only a field goal and a half for Clemson at home is the market flashing a warning about the Tigers — the closest "big brand" line on the board.
What we're watching for
Whether LSU–Ole Miss lives up to a 59.5 total and settles the SEC West pecking order early. Whether Texas Tech is a real Big 12 favorite or a ranked team about to get exposed on its own Friday night. And whether any of the top five slips into a backdoor cover that reminds everyone how thin the margin is in a twelve-team playoff field.
