Tricep rope pushdown

The rope pushdown is the go-to triceps exercise in almost every gym. It is easy to learn, easy on the elbows, and lets you take sets close to failure safely.

Short answer

Set a rope on a high pulley. Stand tall, grab the rope with your elbows at your sides, then push the rope down until your arms are straight, spreading the ends apart at the bottom. Let it rise slowly until your forearms are about parallel. 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.

How to do it

1
Set the rope high. Pulley at the top, rope attachment clipped on.
2
Stand tall. Slight forward lean, elbows tucked at your sides.
3
Push down. Straighten your arms, keeping the elbows still.
4
Spread the rope. Pull the ends apart at the bottom and squeeze the triceps.
5
Control the return. Let the rope rise until your forearms are about parallel to the floor.

What it should feel like

The back of the arms squeezing at the bottom. Shoulders and chest stay out of it.

Pair with an overhead triceps exercise for complete triceps training. The simplest rule that works: add reps inside the range first, and once every set hits the top of the range, add weight next session. GymAdapt does this for you from the sets you log, and tells you why the target changed.
