How to do it
What it should feel like
The biceps working hardest at the bottom of the rep. No shoulder or back involvement.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the weight at the bottom. A fast drop with a straight arm strains the elbow. Control it.
- Lifting the elbow off the pad. Keep the upper arm flat.
- Seat too high or low. Your armpit should sit near the top edge of the pad.
- Too heavy. Preacher curls need lighter weights than standing curls.
Variations
Standing curl for heavier loading.
Free-standing curl with a wrist twist.
Constant tension through the whole curl.
Sets, reps and programming
| Goal | Sets × reps | Effort | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muscle | 3 × 8–15 | 0–2 reps in reserve | 60–90 s |
| Small muscles (delts, calves) | 3–4 × 12–20 | 0–2 reps in reserve | 45–75 s |
| Learning it | 2 × 12–15, light | Slow, 1 s squeeze | 60 s |
Leave the arm slightly bent at the bottom to protect the elbow. The simplest rule that works: add reps inside the range first, and once every set hits the top of the range, add weight next session. GymAdapt does this for you from the sets you log, and tells you why the target changed.
Questions people ask
What are preacher curls good for?
Strict biceps work with emphasis on the stretched position, without the ability to swing.
Preacher curl vs regular curl?
Preacher curls are stricter and harder at the bottom; standing curls let you lift more and are harder at the top.
Why do preacher curls hurt my elbow?
Usually from dropping fast into a fully locked arm. Lower slowly and stop just short of straight.
How many sets and reps for preacher curls?
3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per arm.
